Australia: A Weekend on the Central Coast
Connecting Sydney to Newcastle, the Central Coast region of Australia stretches all the way from the Hawkesbury River to the southern end of Lake Macquarie. Covering so much space, the Central Coast has plenty to do and makes the perfect place for a weekend away.
Saturday | 10 am
If you’ve just arrived on the Central Coast than the first thing you should do is grab some breakfast at one of the local cafes. There are a range of fabulous cafes and restaurants in the area so make sure you do some research before you go on the search for a meal just to make sure you’re getting the best the coast has to offer!
Too hungry to conduct a Google search? Not a problem, we’ve all been there. Make your way to Bella Natural Food Co for a range of different breakfast options, most of them guilt free! If you have a bit of a sweet tooth than I recommend ordering the banana bread with organic honeycomb.
Saturday | 1pm
If you’re feeling a little sluggish after your breakfast then perhaps a little activity outside will get you going. Somersby Falls is the perfect place to do this!
There is plenty to do at Somersby Falls, so it’s a great place to spend the afternoon. You can pack some lunch and make most of the picnic area. With free barbecues and picnic tables, there is plenty of space for you to settle in.
After lunch venture off along the Somersby Falls walking track, which takes you through the rainforest giving you the most amazing views of the waterfalls. Make sure you pack your swimsuits so you can cool off with a dip underneath the waterfall after your walk.
Saturday | 6pm
After a big day of exploring the Central Coast area, it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy some great food and drinks. It’s a Saturday night so there’s a lot happening in and around the Central Coast. If you are after an outstanding view of the peninsula, reasonably priced drinks and a local atmosphere, look no further than Margarita Daze.
Located in Umina, this beachside hangout is very popular with the locals and for a good reason. Because you are going on a Saturday night I would definitely recommend calling ahead and making a booking to ensure you get a seat on the deck.
Once you’ve arrived order a cocktail, sit back and enjoy the combination of live music, great food and that fresh ocean breeze. It's the perfect spot for just dinner and a few drinks, or if you wish you can continue to party into the night.
Sunday | 11am
Hopefully you’ve had a lovely big sleep in this morning and you’re ready for the day. If you like animals, and let's be honest - who doesn't? You are going to love the Australian Reptile Park.
Just over a 10 minute drive from Gosford, the Australian Reptile Park is a hands on zoo that is home to many exotic reptiles and a few Australian native animals. This is a great day out for the whole family.
Make sure you catch the reptile show to learn about the venom program and you won’t want to miss the thrilling action that is feeding Elvis, their monster crocodile. There is also an exciting playground for the littler travelers and several interactive exhibits to get you all involved.
Sunday | 5pm
Unlike the overly popular Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, you’ll almost have the whole track to yourself when walking the Bouddi National Park Coastal Walk. This is the perfect way to wind down after a long weekend of playing tourist.
You’ll start from Putty Beach, making your way past Maitland Bay and it is absolutely stunning. A great way to get outside in summer and watch the sunset while taking in the rugged coastline. This is a relatively easy hike, spanning about 8 kilometers.
Sunday | 7pm
What better way to finish your Central Coast trip than with delicious food. There are so many great restaurants, pubs and bars in the Central Coast area, so it's often hard to pick just one. I recommend doing a little research and checking out some places close to where you're staying.
However, if you’re in the mood for some Spanish inspired Tapas and sangria than I insist that you make your way to Gusto Tapas Bar in Ettalong Beach. It's probably best to get a few things and share here just so you get to try as much as possible because the food here is to die for.
So order a glass of Spanish wine and a plate of the chorizo and enjoy your last moments on the Central Coast!
